July President’s Update

The July meeting will be on July 10 at the Old Spaghetti Factory at 11:30. Fred McDavitt. A close friend of Doug Bomarito will present an Early History of PBRs in Viet Nam.  There will be a 30 to 40-minute video followed by a presentation by Fred.  If you need to leave before the presentation is over, not a problem as the luncheon will go past 1:30.  You do not want to miss this.

We continue to plan for this year’s August Chapter picnic.  The Picnic will be August 3 from noon to 4PM in the afternoon at the same waterfront park in Washougal WA as last year with the same pricing ($20 per adult, $10 for ages 8-12, and under 8 free- max for a family $60).  More detailed information, including a signup list, is posted on our website. http://oregon.usnachapters.net/  Because of the recent donations we will hold a silent auction at the picnic.  IF anyone has USNA “stuff” they would like to enter into the auction.

As our chapter covers a large area, most alumni do not have a chance to attend many if not all of our gatherings.  We would like to expand our activities to include some regional activities such as occasional happy hours or other gatherings.  If anyone would like to set up an alumni event let me know and I will send you the names/emails of the alumni in your regional area.  There are many alumni in some of the cities in Oregon that are a way from Portland.  Examples include:

Bend 28 alumni

Salem 28 alumni

Vancouver 32 alumni

Eugene/Corvallis 38 alumni

I will be attempting to set up a periodic USNA happy hour for the 36 alumni in Lake Oswego. Still in the “to do” stage

The Parents Club of Oregon and SW Washington is sponsoring the All Academy Ball this year on December 21 at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville. The council recently voted to provide a $1000 gift to support the Ball. Additionally they have asked us to help them identify potential sponsors for the event.  They are over ½ way to their goal of $11000.  If you know of a company that would be willing to help sponsor the event, please contact Karen Faux at (541) 760 2713, email usnapcorwa@gmail.com. Thanks for your help.  Also, please plan on attending.  What a wonderful way to support our current midshipmen and their families.

Our web site has posted information on travel and lodging at the 2020 Navy Notre Dame game in Ireland.  John Adams went last time and says the experience is great.

Remember, Chapter Challenge Coins can be the perfect gift.  See Frank Swientek.

We are still in need of a chapter Secretary.

IMPORTANT INFO!!! Navy-Notre Dame 2020 in Dublin

Notre Dame in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday, 29 August 2020!
Join us in Dublin!
There have been many questions regarding flights, hotels and, of course, game tickets. This email is to answer some of those questions and to encourage you to purchase a package today.

Packages: There are a variety of travel packages to choose from. You can choose from 3-star, 4-star and 5-star hotels as well as a selection of itineraries. For those who want to travel Ireland on your own, a great option is to purchase the 3 Day Dublin package. This package surrounds the days of the game so that you’ll be in the heart of the game festivities. It also guarantees your hotel room and game ticket while providing you free time before and/or after the game to explore on your own.

Tickets: Currently, all game tickets are owned by the promotor of the game – Anthony Travel. This is different from the past two trips to Dublin. This means the only way to guarantee a game ticket now is by purchasing a travel package at www.navy2ireland.com Seats are being assigned on a first come/first served basis – the earlier you purchase your package, the more likely you’ll be able to get your seat preference. Individual game tickets are expected to go on sale early 2020. If you wait, be sure you are able to get a flight and hotel. In 2012, tickets sold out in two hours.

Hotels & Flights: Thousands of Navy and Notre Dame fans will be flying to Dublin at approximately the same time. This is huge pressure on the airlines and hotels in the area. We have put a hold on hotel rooms for those purchasing travel packages. However, airfare is not included in travel packages. Commercial flights generally do not become available to the public until 11 months prior to departure. Anthony Travel will partner with Aer Lingus, Ireland’s national flag airline carrier, and potentially other carriers, to provide exclusive flight options from key cities prior to them going on sale to the general public. Priority will be provided to those that have already purchased a package.

Events: Planning for events prior to the game is still underway and details will be provided once confirmed. Please check for updates at www.usna.com/ireland as events will be added.

Should you have any questions regarding travel packages or game activity, please contact Noreen Frenaye at Noreen.frenaye@usna.com.
